The Basics of Blackjack
Blackjack is a game of cards that can be played by two or more players. The game is played on a semicircular table that can accommodate varying numbers of players. Each player makes a bet using chips. Once the bets are placed, a dealer deals each player two cards face up and one card face down. Each player must then decide whether to hit, stand, or double down their hand. The highest hand wins.
Blackjack rules vary depending on the type of game and the table, but most games require a minimum of two decks of cards with a total of 52 cards. The aces count as either 1 or 11 and cards 2 to 9 are graded according to their pip value. The tens and face cards hold ten points each. The dealer stands behind the table and chip rack and the players sit on the other side.
The dealer will deal each player two cards facing up and himself a card face down. If a player’s first two cards are an ace and a ten-card, they have a natural or blackjack, which pays one and a half times the player’s original bet. If the dealer also has a blackjack, the hand is over and all players who did not have a natural lose their bets.
In some blackjack games, the dealers will offer players insurance. This is a side bet that the dealer has a ten-card in his down-card to complete a blackjack. Insurance is usually taken for half of the original bet and pays 2-1 in case the dealer has a blackjack. Most dealers will advise their players to take insurance, but it is usually not wise.
Many players will stand with a hand of 16 when the dealer has an ace showing, thinking that they will win. However, the dealer will make a 17 or higher nearly 80 percent of the time and will beat the player’s hand in most cases. If the player and dealer tie, it is a standoff or push and their bet remains on the table.
Some players have a mathematical approach to the game of blackjack, which they use to determine their strategy. This is called basic strategy, and it dictates how a player should play any hand.
